The Potter's House Art Studio L.L.C. is a creative haven located in Enterprise, Alabama, where people of all ages and skill levels can explore the art of pottery. At The Potter's House, we believe in the power of creativity and community, and we're dedicated to providing a space where everyone can discover the joy of working with clay.
Richard started in ceramic arts as a freshman in high school, earning numerous art awards and a small art scholarship. After high school, he attended the local community college and continued his learning of ceramic arts. Due to the increased efforts in the Global War on Terror, Richard enlisted in the US Army as a Combat Medic, putting his ceramics and college education on hold. While stationed in South Korea, Richard learned of the passing of his high school’s ceramics art teacher, Mr. Larry Vetter, who was an instrumental part of Richard’s life in his teen years. After over 17 years of not touching clay, Richard decided to try the potter’s wheel at the local US Army Moral, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) art center at Camp Humphreys, South Korea. After a few trials and errors, it all started to come back to him; with the guidance of some of his South Korean counterparts and the art center’s staff, Richard’s love for clay was reignited.
While in South Korea, his work garnered much attention, and with the help of the resources at the MWR art center, Richard participated in several local festivals to display and sell his work. Richard currently lives in Enterprise, AL, and still serves his country. He now works out of his garage, where he has built a small studio, and as of January 2023, he started his business in ceramics named Pottery 1018 “Marred in his hands.” He utilizes clay and raw materials purchased either locally or in nearby states to produce elegant forms of either functional ware or display pieces. He uses an electric kiln to reach temperatures exceeding 2200°F to ensure every ceramic piece is of the highest quality. Richard believes in constantly challenging the craftsmanship of his work and never settling for lack of quality.
In August 2024, Richard took his passion for ceramics to the next level by opening The Potter's House Art Studio in Enterprise, AL. The studio offers a variety of pottery classes and workshops, including pottery wheel lessons, hand-building classes, and paint-your-own pottery sessions. At The Potter's House, Richard shares his love for clay with the community, providing a creative space where people of all ages and skill levels can explore the art of pottery.
